Women’s Opportunity Award

Each year, we give a cash grant to a woman who is the primary breadwinner for her family. Awardees must be enrolled in or accepted into a vocational or skills training program, or an undergraduate degree program. Recipients, many of whom have overcome enormous obstacles including poverty, domestic violence, and drug and alcohol abuse, may use the awards to offset any costs associated with their efforts to attain higher education, such as books, childcare and transportation.

Our 2009 Women’s Opportunity Award Winner: Roxanne Cooperstone

Roxanne CooperstoneRoxanne Cooperstone is a student at Glendale Community College.  Roxanne struggled with several abusive relationships with men, as well as her own addiction to drugs and alcohol.  She hit rock bottom after her son was born, when due to her addiction, he was not released to her custody when she left the hospital.  This motivated her to enter a homeless shelter with a year-long substance abuse program.  She became sober, and gained custody of her son – a wonderful victory.  Now, she is working towards her degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, so that she can help other women and families who struggle with the same difficulties.  Roxanne said at the Luncheon, “In a society where my story could have produced judgment and fear, you have chosen to embrace me instead.  Thank you with all my heart.”  Congratulations, Roxanne!
